{"id":86,"date":"2012-07-07T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-07-07T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/?page_id=86"},"modified":"2021-06-16T13:54:40","modified_gmt":"2021-06-16T17:54:40","slug":"2012-pacific-coast-highway-ride","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/?page_id=86","title":{"rendered":"2012 Pacific Coast Highway Ride"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-004.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-544\" title=\"Cali 004\" src=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-004-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-004-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-004-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-004-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>Mr. Smith and I are headed to Los Angeles, California to pick up a couple of Harleys and head north to Washington State.\u00a0 The plan is to take the Pacific Coast Highway north as far as it will take us, cross the Columbia River into Washington State,\u00a0make a U-turn\u00a0back over the Columbia River, across the Cascade Mountains,stop for a day or two in Lake Tahoe, and then continue along the Sierra Nevada Mountains, back into California and LA.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll do our best to make the whole trip in 10 days, weather and butts permitting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-003.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-543\" title=\"Cali 003\" src=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-003-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"415\" height=\"302\" \/><\/a>Day 1 &#8211; After an uneventful flight to Los Angeles, we\u00a0took a cab to Glendale Harley Davidson and grabbed our bikes.\u00a0 Mr. Smith is riding a 2012 Street Glide and I&#8217;m riding a 2012 Road King.\u00a0 We had a little excitement at the Harley store.\u00a0 A well-dressed gentleman entered the store directly behind us and walked to a different part of the store.\u00a0 Within 30 minutes, the police were at the store and had the gentleman in handcuffs.\u00a0 It seems the gentleman &#8220;allegedly&#8221; was caught shoplifting.\u00a0 Anyway, we eventually got on the road.\u00a0 We took Sunset Strip through Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and Belair to the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu and headed north.\u00a0 The ride was beautiful and a little chilly as we were following the Pacific Ocean north to Santa Barbara for the night.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-542\" title=\"Cali 001\" src=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-001-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"438\" height=\"336\" \/><\/a>Day 2 &#8211; Leathers and layers!\u00a0 56 degrees and foggy when we left Santa Barbara.\u00a0 The fog and the chill followed us up the pacific coast all morning.\u00a0 It is amazing how so much of the California coast looks nothing like San Diego, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and all those other towns that get all the media coverage.\u00a0 If not for the cliffs we could be riding in South Dakota or Northern Florida.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-002.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-547\" title=\"Cali 002\" src=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-002-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"441\" height=\"326\" \/><\/a>The sun finally came out around noon just in time for our arrival at Elephant Seal Beach.\u00a0 These humongous creatures were all over the beach just laying there throwing sand on themselves and basking in the sun.\u00a0 Every once in a while one of the seals would roll into the water to cool off.\u00a0 What a life.\u00a0 No surfers though.\u00a0 Seals attract sharks.\u00a0 Speaking of laying around, we decided to spend the night in Monterey.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-007.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-548\" title=\"Cali 007\" src=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-007-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"399\" height=\"543\" \/><\/a>Day 3 \u2013 We left Monterey early in the morning with the sun brightly shining, headed for San Francisco.\u00a0 It\u2019s Saturday so traffic was incredible as we got close to the Golden Gate Bridge.\u00a0 How is it that San Francisco\u2019s temperature reached 101 degrees, but everywhere else the temperature was a chilly 60 degrees?.\u00a0 There was no parking available at the Muir Woods when we got there so we didn\u2019t get an opportunity to see this magnificent\u00a0Redwood forest. We did ride some great twisties around Muir Woods though.\u00a0 The road opened up as we got north of Sonoma Beach and we did some great technical riding for the rest of the day.\u00a0 After 11 hours on our bikes we pulled into Fort Bragg for the night.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-008.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-549\" title=\"Cali 008\" src=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-008-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"442\" height=\"336\" \/><\/a>Day 4 \u2013 It was sunny and cool in Fort Bragg when we headed to Oregon.\u00a0Fort Bragg, no Fort, and nothing to brag about\u2026 but what great riding just north of Fort Bragg and all the way to Oregon!\u00a0 Great curves, and smattering of redwood forests, hills, and the beautiful rocky cliffs of the pacific!\u00a0 The fog set in once we crossed the Oregon boarder and the temperature dropped about 10 degrees.\u00a0 Spending the night at Coos Bay.\u00a0 Headed \u00a0to Washington in the morning.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-550\" title=\"Cali\" src=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"434\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a>Day 5 \u2013 We left Coos Bay,Oregon in the rain and at a chilly 50 degrees.\u00a0 It was cloudy through most of our ride north on Route 101 up to Washington State.\u00a0 We crossed the Columbia River on Route 401 north, where the sun finally showed its face.\u00a0 From Route 401 we went south on Route 4 through some fun winding roads and back over the Columbia River to the I \u2013 5 and Portland, Oregon.\u00a0 After a quick dinner at a Lebanese restaurant, Kamara, we hit the sack, exhausted after another 11 hours of riding.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-012.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-552\" title=\"Cali 012\" src=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-012-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"413\" height=\"297\" \/><\/a>Day 6 \u2013 We headed south from Portland today under cloudy, chilly, and wet conditions.\u00a0 After leaving Interstate 5 south onto Route 22 east to Bend, Oregon for lunch.\u00a0 A very relaxing ride through some great fir and spruce tree forests.\u00a0 At Bend, we jumped on Route 97 south through the Cascade Mountains (some still covered with snow) to Klamath Falls. Klamath Falls sits in the middle of a tremendous crater possibly formed when an asteroid hit the earth millions of years ago.\u00a0 The town is surrounded by very high hills (26 miles around) and lies next to the beautiful Lake Klamath.\u00a0 Headed to Lake Tahoe,Nevada tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-013.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-553\" title=\"Cali 013\" src=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-013-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"446\" height=\"324\" \/><\/a>Day 7 \u2013 From Klamath Falls we headed south on route 97 back into California, across the lava beds and past beautiful Mt. Shasta. Mount Shasta is an extinct volcano responsible for the lava beds and boulders strewn all around the area.\u00a0 It\u2019s a bright chilly morning, and the views and ride is incredible!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-019.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-554\" title=\"Cali 019\" src=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-019-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"421\" height=\"326\" \/><\/a>From Mt. Shasta, we jumped on route 89 which took us to Lassen Volcanic National Park.\u00a0 Not only a great ride, but beautiful vistas of snow covered mountains.\u00a0 In this picture we\u2019re at around 9000 ft with about 2 ft of snow and about 38 degrees.\u00a0 From the park we continued southwest on 89 into Nevada towards Lake Tahoe.\u00a0 Good news, the temperature headed up to over 90 degrees!\u00a0 Bad news, the heat caused the regulator on my bike to give out and we needed to wait 2 hours for a tow to our friend\u2019s house (Brian) just outside of Lake Tahoe to spend a few nights.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-022.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-555\" title=\"Cali 022\" src=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-022-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"409\" height=\"338\" \/><\/a>Day \u2013 8 BUM&#8230;bum,bum,\u2026BUM&#8230;bum,bum,\u2026BUM\u2026bum, bum,\u2026BUM\u2026bum,bum\u2026BUM\u2026BUM\u2026 That\u2019s right little fella, that\u2019s the Bonanza theme song.\u00a0 And here we are at Brian\u2019s house just outside of the Carson City studio set in Incline Village, Nevada.\u00a0 Brian let me borrow his Ponderosa map, but reneged on letting me burn a hole in the middle like on the TV show.\u00a0 We\u2019re staying just about where the left most Ponderosa boundary meets the lake.\u00a0 Pretty nice!!!!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-014.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-556\" title=\"Cali 014\" src=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-014-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"433\" height=\"325\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-014-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-014-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-014-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 433px) 100vw, 433px\" \/><\/a>We woke up to beautiful weather at Lake Tahoe, but unfortunately my bike was not repaired until late in the day so we did not do much riding. Brian and the lovely Janice are great hosts and we enjoyed sipping wine out on the deck, talking and laughing. Tomorrow, we\u2019ll follow the Ponderosa boundary along the north of the lake, north to the route that leads to Carson City, but in the opposite direction.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-023.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-557\" title=\"Cali 023\" src=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-023-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"440\" height=\"651\" \/><\/a>Day \u2013 9 We woke to another beautiful, but chilly morning and bid Brian and Janice so long as we took off for Bishop, California.\u00a0 Everyone we spoke to recommended that we take route 395, and they were right!\u00a0 A fun ride of about 250 miles along the east side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains at elevations of 5000 \u2013 10,000 ft, passed Yosemite National Park and into Bishop.\u00a0 We went from temperatures in the 50\u2019s to temps less than 40 and then temps of about 90 when we arrived at Bishop.\u00a0 South to Burbank tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-024.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-559\" title=\"Cali 024\" src=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-024-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"431\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a>Day 10 \u2013 \u201cLong and (not so) winding road\u2026\u201d A beautiful warm morning met us as we headed south on route 395.\u00a0 We rode most of the day through straight-aways in a valley between two mountain ranges, passing through ancient lava fields, passed Death Valley, Red Rock, and the Mojave Desert.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-025.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-560\" title=\"Cali 025\" src=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-025-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"345\" \/><\/a>Someone finally found a way to make use of the space in the Mojave Desert.\u00a0 This is a picture of windmills just outside of Mojave, California.\u00a0 These are only about half of the windmills visible from Route 14.\u00a0 Just across the street from the windmills, is a parking lot for commercial jets.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-031.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-561\" title=\"Cali 031\" src=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-031-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"433\" height=\"580\" \/><\/a>Mr. Smith and I rolled into Burbank around 2 PM and headed to Hollywood to do a little sight seeing.\u00a0 We walked down Hollywood Boulevard and noticed all the Stars with performers names, as well as Madame Trousseau\u2019s Museum, and Grauman\u2019s Chinese Theater.\u00a0 I was most impressed by the lunch we had at 25 degrees (the difference in temperature between medium-rare and well-done hamburgers).\u00a0 Mr. Smith enjoyed a classic burger while I ordered an Ahi Tuna burger that was exquisite, definitely a \u201cmust\u201d for anyone visiting Hollywood Boulevard.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-032.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-562\" title=\"Cali 032\" src=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-032-1024x754.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"425\" height=\"299\" \/><\/a>Day 11 \u2013 Last day of our ride \u201c\u2026so we loaded up the bikes and we rode to Beverly.\u00a0 Hills that is, movie stars, swimming pools\u2026\u201d Actually we jumped onto Mulholand Drive and rode in the hills above Los Angeles and then down to the beach.\u00a0Mulholand Drive is the famous road from where movies shoot Los Angeles from above and has been used in many movies.\u00a0 This picture is from the first turn out on Mulholand Drive.\u00a0 A little hazy, but what do you expect from LA in the AM?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-011.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-563\" title=\"Cali 011\" src=\"http:\/\/wherearemomanddad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cali-011-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"440\" height=\"349\" \/><\/a>Well another great trip in the bag.\u00a0 Just under 2800 miles, from LA along the coast of California and Oregon, into Washington, back into Oregon across the Cascade Mountains, into Nevada, down along the Sierra Nevada Mountains back into California and to Glendale Harley Davidson and home.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mr. Smith and I are headed to Los Angeles, California to pick up a couple of Harleys and head north to Washington State.\u00a0 The plan is to take the Pacific Coast Highway north as far as it will take us, &hellip;
